Q&A What do I require of someone before joining my team?

Q: I’ve always led worship by myself. This week I had two people approach me about joining the worship team. TWO! I’m so excited! I love the idea of forming a team. My question is this: what do I require of someone before joining my team?

A: So cool! It’s always exciting bringing new people on board! There could be a number of different answers to this question depending on your denomination, your pastor, and even your own personal preferences, but I would start with these 3 things:

1. Some sort of audition

Those who know me well know I love auditions. They also know I have at times had a pretty rigorous audition process. Though I’m more relaxed about it now, I do think auditions are a necessity. But they don’t have to be a strain. Just meet with someone for a few minutes and worship together. See how they play/sing and worship when it’s just the two of you. Then talk a little bit to see if their personality seems to be a good fit. Short and sweet is okay! Don’t overthink it!

***If you want a more in depth audition process, I laid one out in my book Becoming a Worship Pastor. Or you can shoot me an email and I can give you some ideas!

2. Church Attendance

I pretty much always require someone to be attending the church for at least 3 months before I’ll put them on stage. The reason is mainly for them. I want them to be sure they have made our church their church. Usually if someone has been with us for 3 months or so they are done “church hopping” and have decided our church is where they want to be.

3. An understanding of the vision

Make sure the person aligns with the vision of your team and church. If they’ve been attending the church for 3 months they probably do, but you can touch on this in the audition process too: just explain the vision and ask them if they are on board with that. I always want to make sure soemone joining a team knows the goal of the team and church and want to participate in that.

As long as the people auditioning have been in attendance (and pass your audition), you could add those two to your team this week! That’s so cool! I love to see teams grow!
