Leadership Tip: Build a Team, Not a Band

Leadership Tip: Build a team of ministers, not a band of musicians.

If you’re a worship leader, ask yourself, “do I have a team of ministers or a band of musicians?” Either is okay, but you should know which one you have.

Here are some differences:

Bands of musicians show up, play the parts, and go home. They still worship, they still pursue excellence, they still do a great job. But bands are primarily focused on the music.

Teams of ministers are primarily focused on ministry. They play the parts, they lead in worship, they pray over congregations, and they look for ways to serve outside of music.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with a band of musicians necessarily, but I do think churches that have teams of ministers are at an advantage.

A team of ministers is on mission. They know the vision of the church and their role in achieving it. They know they are more than guitar players, singers, and drummers - they are leaders. They take their roles seriously. They are active in the church. They are musicians but they are also disciple makers. They are ministers first, musicians second. They are effective.
