Two Team Gatherings that are Guaranteed to Grow your Team (Part 5)

Is it hard to find time to communicate vision to your team?

Is it difficult to hit team goals?

Do you wish your team could interact outside of the hustle of Sunday morning?

Do you want to build relationships with team members?

Do you want the ability to pour into your team regularly?

I often hear of worship leaders with struggles like the ones above. They try their best to grow their team on Sunday before service or with a coffee here and there, but end up feeling like they’re not getting anywhere. I get it. I’ve been there. I’ve led teams that didn’t seem to be growing.

THE BEST THING I did to begin moving in the right direction was commit to having regular team meetings. There are two types of meetings I’m talking about. The particular meeting you choose will depend on what you’re currently doing.

If you’re not meeting regularly at all, start here:

Rehearsals

The first type of meeting is a rehearsal. If you’re not rehearsing with your team regularly, you are missing out!

Rehearsals aren’t only great for practicing songs.

They’re great for community. They allow your team to get to know each other. My friend and fellow worship leader, Kurtis Parks, always says that community off-stage causes chemistry on-stage. And he’s right! When your team knows each other better, they play together better!

They’re great for spiritual growth. Need a space to pour into your team spiritually? Rehearsals give you that opportunity! I like to set aside time at either the beginning or the end of every rehearsal for a devotional or prayer.

They’re great for casting vision! When your team is all together regularly, you can cast vision for the weekend, the coming months, and even the year. A regular meeting also allows you to track goals together!

If you’re not already rehearsing regularly, I pray you’ll try it this year!

Concerned your team won’t follow from no rehearsal to a weekly one? Don’t worry! You can start slow. Start with once a month. At that first rehearsal let your team know that after a number of months you’ll be going to twice a month. Then later on move to once a week.

A regular rehearsal will do so much for your team! So much!

If you’re already rehearsing regularly, maybe you should try this:

Team Night

Team Nights are periodic gatherings that are designed to grow your team. Many churches do these quarterly, others monthly. The idea behind a team night is spend time with your team outside of Sunday morning or a midweek rehearsal. They allow for more time to cast vision, teach on worship, and even teach musically. They also allow for community. Here’s how a typical team night looks for me:

  • We start with a meal and time to hang.
  • After 20 or 30 minutes we worship together as a team.
  • After worship I might teach on a worship or leadership related topic or we might break into groups to learn about different subjects
  • Then we hang for another 10 or 15 minutes

The whole thing lasts about an hour and a half. Maybe a little longer.

Capping the beginning and end in hang time is important. I want my worship team members to be friends. I want them know each other. I want them to love each other. To do that they need time together.

Worshiping together is great too. There’s something different about worshiping together outside of Sunday morning!

The teaching section could look a few different ways. Sometimes it’s me or another speaker. Sometimes it’s small group style where we might look at subjects like playing with a click track or even learning a new instrument.

I’ve found Team Nights to be a great place for new team members to get connected too!

The options are pretty limitless when it comes to team nights. I have a friend who’s team alternates between fun things like bowling or a movie one month and then teaching the next.

You could really do anything. The point is to disciple your team!

Try having regular team meetings this year. I promise it will help your team grow!
