3 Ways to use Rehearsal to Grow Leaders
I love growing leaders. It’s one of the best parts of my job as a worship leader. What I don’t love is trying to make time to do that. I wish I could dedicate hours of my week to leader development, but that isn’t always possible.
What I’ve learned to do is use the time I do have - like in rehearsal! Rehearsal is a great place to give team members opportunities to lead. For singers wanting to lead the congregation to musicians wanting to lead the band to team members who want to lead spiritually, rehearsal can be great training ground!
Here are few ideas for easy ways to develop leaders during rehearsal:
For Singers
Rehearsal is the perfect place for someone to try leading for the first time! It’s low pressure and there’s lots of encouragement!
Have a BGV lead a song in rehearsal. It’s okay for him to lead the song in rehearsal for multiple weeks in a row even! It gives you a chance to be the audience so to speak. You can find where to coach him on leading the team and see how the team follows other leaders! You take a look at his confidence, stage presence and more!
For Musicians
Have a musician who is always coming up with cool parts or is really tech savvy? She might be your next music director! Give her a shot in rehearsal!
Similar to a BGV leading for the first time, this person may spend several weeks in this role in rehearsal before ever hitting the stage. That’s okay! Use rehearsal as your training ground! Nothing has to happen immediately!

For those Wanting to Lead Spiritually
I love hearing the hearts of those on my team and I love watching team members lead others spiritually! Team devotions are a great place to start!
Have team members start your rehearsal with a devotional. Have them share their testimony or what God is speaking to them about their role in ministry.
Start with these 3 and keep your eyes open for more opportunities to train leaders. Not everyone wants to be a leader, but for those who do, give them the opportunity!
Not every musician will make a great MD, but wouldn’t it be nice if everyone COULD music direct if you needed them to? Not every BGV will make a great worship leader, in fact some may not even be interested! But wouldn’t it be nice to know that they can? I’m certain that person on your team won’t want to share between songs, but practice time would be handy for the ones who do!
Use your rehearsal time to your advantage! Rehearsals a huge opportunity for discipleship!
