Where does your team need to grow?
Sometimes as leaders we don't know where to begin. I had a conversation with a worship leader a few weeks ago who wanted to take active steps in growing his team, but didn't know where to begin.
My advice to him was to ASK his team where they wanted to grow. Sometimes that's all you need to do to find out where to start.
Here's what happened:
John, the worship leader, sat down with his team after their midweek rehearsal. He spent a few minutes talking about the importance of continual growth and then asked, "How can I help you grow? What do you need from me?"
An answer rose to the top quickly from John's bass player:
The bass player had been on the team for about 6 months and really hadn't been playing bass much longer than that. He was a guitar player before, but never with a band or worship team. He said it would really help if he could get some explanation on different lingo that was thrown around, like when John would tell the team to "build" or if he told them to play a "diamond."
John hadn't even thought to explain those things. He just kind of assumed everyone knew what he meant. Those are easy questions to answer, but John didn't know they needed to be answered.
What's great about this story in particular is that it sets John and his team up well for the future. Now that John understands that everyone doesn't know his lingo, he can teach those terms to new teammates. He knows to explain himself.
I think that's the takeaway for you and me: Find out where your team needs to grow and then grow your team.
Before I go, I want to mention something else - John's question to his team. It says a lot about the leader that John is. John asked, "How can I help you grow?"
As leaders and as pastors, I think that question should constantly be on our minds. We probably all believe that great leaders are great servants. This question is a great way to put that idea into action. I encourage you to ask that question this week - how can I help you grow? You'll be amazed what can happen! Even simple solutions, like explaining verbiage, can have a profound impact on your team.
That said... How can I help you grow? What do you need from Worship Leader Coaching? We're here to help!
