A Simple Productivity Tool that Works Surprisingly Well

A few weeks ago, I found myself in the middle of several projects: services to plan, blog posts to write, clients to coach, an event I was leading worship at, a couple meetings to prepare for, and a plethora of other things. Now, much of that is a regular week, but there were some deadlines I was about to run up against and for whatever reason I couldn’t focus on one thing, so it felt like much more than usual. At times I can be a bit of a procrastinator and this time it was catching up with me. I needed to focus but there were so many things pulling for my attention!

Ever had a day like that? Where you just need to focus? A while back I came across a technique to help me focus and get work done. For some of you this isn’t new information, but for some of you it could be a game changer!

I didn’t come up with this idea. I don’t know who did, if there’s a name associated with it, or anything else. I just know it works! Here’s what you do:

Step 1: Pick a Project

Start by picking a project – any project! You have a lot to do, I know, but just pick a project. Use the prioritization tool in THIS POST to help!

Step 2: Set a Timer

Set a timer for 25 minutes. The goal is to work for 25 minutes straight, without any distraction. That means you’ll want to turn off your phone (or set it across the room if that’s your timer!), turn off your internet (unless of course you need it for the project), and get to work!

Step 3: Take a Break

After 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break. Chances are by that point the break with actually interrupt your work. Let it! Don’t keep working! Take the break. Then set the timer for another 25 minutes!

Step 4: Repeat

Repeat the process! Keep working on the project you’re on is finished. Work for 25 minutes, take a break, work for 25 minutes, take a break. Keep pressing on.

This productivity technique has helped me get a lot done! The first few minutes of work is still hard to get into, but by the first break I’m usually annoyed that I have to stop working! I’ve worked for several hours like this. It’s helped me write blog posts, plan service, write songs, and clean my office! Knowing a break is coming helps me get to work. The short, 5 minute break is just enough rest to clear my head, get a drink of water, and then dive back in! When I started doing this I was amazed at how much I can get done in 25 minutes!

Try it! Let us know how it works for you!
