Posture is Important
If you know my worship leading style, you know I value expressive worship. I think it’s important that our physical expression matches our heart’s expression in worship. I believe posture is important!
I recently attended a worship service where the worship leader had her arms crossed for the majority of a song she was leading. I’m not just being critical or looking for mistakes. Everything else about her leading was great - her voice, the way she spoke between songs, eye contact with the congregation, etc. But her posture gave me pause.
Her posture stood out mostly because she looked bored. I don’t think worship should be boring - especially from the leader’s perspective! Although I’m sure she wasn’t, that’s what her posture communicated.
From what I gathered, she was a veteran worship leader. She likely knew the song backward and forward and had been on stages for a number of years. It makes sense that she was relaxed and even confident with who she is and what she was doing. That’s a great thing! But confidence can sometimes cause us to lose sight of some details. Be careful of that!
Posture communicates something. Be aware of what you’re communicating!
Expression in worship, or a posture of worship, can look a number of different ways. Throughout scripture we see kneeling, lifted hands, dancing, and more. People have different bends toward particular expressions and that’s okay! I just hope that we, as leaders, know what those expressions are saying to those we’re leading.
