Leadership Tip: Give Opportuinty to Succeed
Give people room to fail. Or maybe better put - give people the opportunity to succeed.
Earlier this week we posted a Q&A about testing new leadership. Today’s leadership tip is a continuation of that. The main idea of the last post was this: give away responsibility before giving away authority.
To do that requires risk. It’s risky to give someone else a microphone. It’s risky to let someone else call the shots musically. It’s risky to let someone else plan an event. But that’s part of discipleship.
I often to subscribe to the “I do, we do, you do” method when it comes to giving away responsibility over an area. “I do” shows you how. “We do” works together. And “You do” gives away control. As hard as the last phase is, it’s the most important. “You do” is the true test.
I’ve heard a number of leaders tell others to “give someone room to fail” and there’s always something to learn from failure, but in my experience, people more often need an opportunity to succeed.
I’ve found that people surprise me. I’ve found that it’s usually my pride not letting go of an area more than it is someone else not being ready to take it on. I’ve found that people tend to succeed if you give them the chance to. Give new leaders that opportunity.
