Leadership Tip: Buy a Calendar!
On Tuesday I posted a blog about preparing for the coming holiday season. The first thing I suggested was using a calendar. I really think you should! So much so that I’m devoting this entire post to the benefits of a calendar!
If you want to keep from being overwhelmed with the coming holiday season, busy weeks, and even life, a calendar is your number one tool. Here’s why:
1. A calendar gives you an overview of your week, month, and even year.
By writing everything on a calendar, I’m able to get a 10,000 foot view my week, month, and even year. I love having this overview! It allows me to see what’s coming up, I can plan and prepare for meetings and trips, and it helps me to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to things that pop up.
I try to schedule everything - I schedule writing these blog posts, planning meetings for my church, coaching sessions, and more. For me, it doesn’t stop with work related things either - I like to schedule personal time as well.
2. A calendar makes you more intentional with your time.
If I know I have only set aside two hours for a task, then I likely only have that two hours to do the task. That makes me more intentional with that time. It keeps me from spending the first 20 minutes that I should be working on instagram. It keeps me from running over time in the meeting I have that morning. It helps me focus!
3. A calendar gives you a record of what you have done.
In my first point I talked about how my calendar allows me to look forward, but that’s not all. It also allows me to look back. Looking back allows me to see what I’ve accomplished. You’ll be amazed how much you got done in a week when you have a record of it!
Looking back also allows me to see what I haven’t done - like if I haven’t made time to rest or made time for a hobby or for friends and family.
With the busyness of the holidays quickly approaching, now is the time to get started using a calendar!
