Leadership Tip: Be Hospitable
Leadership Tip: Be hospitable!
Hospitality is key to ministry. As we discussed in a blog post earlier this week, a study performed by The Ritz Carton Hotel Company showed that people entering a hotel wanted to feel like they were entering their mothers home - a place where everything is taken care of. A place that is inviting. A place where they can be at ease. I think worship leaders can (and should) apply that study to their teams and to their churches. Here’s how:
1. Be welcoming!
It really is that easy to start. I’ve often seen (and often been guilty of) worship leaders leave the stage, never to be seen again. They hide in the green room or in an empty lobby while service is happening, or in the sound booth. But what if instead of hiding, we started engaging with people? Smile, shake hands, and make it a point to meet people you haven’t met!
2. Find ways to serve people
My friend Jason attended a new (new to them anyway) church one Sunday with his wife and child. He was amazed at how people tried to serve them. One person, who wasn’t even a volunteer, volunteered to show them around the facility, another bought their coffee, another invited Jason and his family to sit with them. THEN at the end of the service that family invited Jason’s family to his small group. Jason and his family felt loved and are now members of the church. They felt that love because they were served well. The people of the church understood hospitality.
I could come up with more points, but really it’s summed up with those two: welcome people and serve them. And do it with a smile. Hospitality is easy - just treat people with the kindness and love that you want to be treated with
