7 Reasons to Write Songs for Your Church

One year ago today I released a book called House Music: Prompts for the Worship Songwriter! It was a such a fun project. It’s been even more fun to see how songwriters have used it! I’m so grateful to all the writers who have let me be part of their creative process!

If you’re interested in writing songs for your church, but are yet to give it a shot, here’s a few reasons I think you should!

1. Your Church has a Unique Voice!

Every church I’ve ever been a part of, visited or even watched online has a unique voice. There are phrases your pastor says all the time, scriptures your small group keeps going back to and promises you keep believing for as a body. Outside songs are great, but they can’t capture that! Only you can.

2. We’re Commanded To!

Psalm 96:1-4 reads, “Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise His name; Proclaim His salvation day after day. Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; He is to be feared above all other gods.”

3. To Care for People

Songwriting is a tool to care for the church. If you belong to a body of believers, you probably know what’s going on in that body. You know of the who are celebrating healing, a birth or reconciliation. You also know of families who are struggling - who are praying for healing, a baby or reconciliation.

As a songwriter you can write songs that praise God for His gifts as well as songs praying to see His word come to pass. You can celebrate, offer encouragement and share scriptures that directly related to the situations around you.

4. To Study the Bible

Songwriting is one of my favorite tools for studying the bible. It forces me to step into the shoes of King David, the disciples or even Jesus. It allows me to explore their thoughts and feelings and understand their stories. When I understand their stories, I begin to understand the word.

5. To Teach and Admonish

Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through songs, hymns and songs of the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”

6. To be Creative as God is Creative

Our God is the ultimate creative. He imagined the stars in the sky, the flowers in the field, the fish in the sea, and… well… everything else for that matter! Even you. And when He imagined you, I thin he imagined you being creative, just as He is creative. Our creativity honors God.

7. God Likes Music

There is music all throughout Scripture! Moses and Miriam sings praises after parting the Red Sea. David writes songs in the field as a shepherd boy. Mary rejoices in song when she finds out she’s pregnant with Jesus. Jesus Himself sings a hymn before being arrested. More than once Paul instructs us in the use of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Music seems to be important to the Lord!
