Grow Your Team (Part 2) WHO should lead?
In Part 1 of this series we discussed how to ease into letting someone lead songs. Due to your questions, we wanted to be sure to address a little bit about WHO should lead songs as well.
Here’s one of the questions we received this week:
Q: I want to grow more leaders and I definitely want to give more opportunities for people to lead. I think I understand how to ease someone into leading a song. What I struggle with is identifying WHO to give the opportunity to. Any advice?
A: That’s awesome! When it comes to developing worship leaders, I always recommend you start by looking for two characteristics: A pastoral heart and confidence.
1. A Pastoral Heart
Find someone who loves the Lord, loves the church, and has a desire to see the church grow spiritually. This is probably someone who shows up early week after week. It’s probably someone who’s always praying for your team and your congregation. It’s probably someone who is humble. It’s probably someone who wants to do anything they can to help the church succeed. That’s a person you can trust to lead your church.
2. Confidence
Find someone who has the confidence to lead. To lead a song, to lead a team, and to lead a congregation, you need to be confident. You need to know your abilities, your teams abilities, and where your church is at.
This is probably someone who has been playing/singing for a while. It’s probably someone who has been around the church for a while. It’s probably someone you already look at as a leader.
You’ll likely have to develop a lot of this in your leaders. Who you’re bringing up doesn’t have to be the most pastoral or the most confident - these areas can be developed, but look for people who have some confidence and a love for your church. Then develop the rest.
